WHAT I’M READING: For Keeps By Tiffany Patterson

For Keeps (Tiffany Patterson) CoverI’ve never read anything by Tiffany Patterson despite having seen her books around a lot. Finally, curiosity got the better of me and I finally decided to check out one of her books. I have never regretted sleeping on anyone this much. Ms. Patterson can write. Damn, she can write.

For Keeps is the fourth book from her series Townsend Brothers but can be read as a standalone. I personally read the other three first (because I’m just weird) and I loved all the other Townsends. You should check out the other books in the series.

To be honest, Tyler started out as kind of an asshole. I know, I know, not everyone will agree but when I see a dude licking his lips, blocking a woman’s path and openly checking out her butt on the first day they meet when they’re supposed to be teacher and student just rubbed me a little wrong. If it were real life, I would have punched him regardless of how good he looked. That being said, the author redeemed him through the rest of the book.

Tyler seemed like a laid back dude but that’s just a façade. He is sexy, dangerous and has a one-track mind when he’s going after something he wants – and this time he wants Destiny. Destiny has been burned before and isn’t really interested in something new especially with a sports star. You see where this is going, right?

Long story short; this is a rollercoaster that you want to get on.

Eve’s Wrath: 6 Things You Might Not Know

EW Website CoverIf I had to pick a book that sticks out from my stable like a sore thumb, I’d definitely go with Eve’s Wrath. It’s definitely different from anything I’ve ever written and frankly, I was a little scared going into it. Though I’ve tried writing Romantic Suspense before there’s usually a mystery being solved. In this case I was just going for straight-up revenge which is new to me.

As if that wasn’t hard enough to chew, I set the whole story within a business environment. So many things could have gone wrong and there was always the risk of the story being boring because the romance takes a backseat to the revenge. Thankfully, it all worked out and from the reviews, it seems like most readers liked it. If you haven’t read the book, you should grab your copy. Do that before reading the rest of this post because there will be spoilers.

Okay, now onto the tea.

1: SHARON HAS NO REMORSE

Sharon WellingSome people wanted to know why Sharon never repented even after going to jail. She still remained as the bitter, evil monster that Eve speared. Why? Because sometimes that’s just how people are. They do not change. If even almost killing Carter (the person she claimed to love the most) didn’t make her rethink her actions, then going to jail was nothing in the grand scheme of things. She has no conscience and will not be getting one anytime soon.

2: CARTER HAD A BROTHER

You remember him, right? Aaron. I didn’t say much about him in the story other than that he was dead and Jackson was his step-son. Frankly, I wish I could’ve at least shown him before his death. He was a really good guy as evidenced by the fact that he was raising a child who wasn’t biologically his. Also, he wasn’t as blinded to Sharon’s faults as Carter was. I hate that he had to die but if he was alive, Eve’s story would never have happened and maybe Sharon could’ve been stopped before she completely crossed over to the dark side.

3: IT WAS INSPIRED BY K-DRAMA ‘SEARCH WWW’

Search WWW PosterIf you’re into kdramas like I am, then I’m sure you know about Search WWW. It’s the story of three women who work in two competitive web portal companies. What impressed me about the whole series was how badass the women were. Bae Ta-mi, the female lead, was great on her own as was the volatile Scarlet. However, Ga-kyeong, Ta-mi’s former boss provided the most inspiration for Eve’s Wrath. She was a fascinating character. Sometimes she had morals, sometimes she had none. Her relationship with her husband and mother-in-law was quite interesting. I won’t lie, it hurt me when her and her husband’s marriage fell apart and I wanted to fix it with a book. So I did!

4: IT WAS WRITTEN ON WATTPAD

The book first came to life on Wattpad. The reason I like to write on Wattpad is because that’s where I started my career. Also, my followers there are awesome. While they read, there are always insightful and encouraging comments that help to guide the writing of the book. I really believe that those comments improved the overall quality of the book because I could see how certain characters were being received and how Eve and Carter’s actions were being perceived. Will I be writing another book on Wattpad? Definitely. If you’d love to read while I write instead of waiting until the book is published, make sure to follow my Wattpad profile. For those who already have an account, my handle is ‘lindaverji’.

5: I’M NOT DONE WITH CARTER & EVE

Not by a long shot. Though their relationship ended on a hopeful note it wasn’t quite what I want for them. After everything these two went through I think they deserve more than a quickie in a hotel room. Even if I don’t write a whole novel for them, expect at least a short story that gives them (and Jackson) an even happier ending.

6: ‘REWRITE THE STARS’ HELPED TO WRITE IT

Have you watched ‘The Greatest Showman’? No? Neither have I 😂. But I love the music that was used in the show. ‘Rewrite the Stars’ by Zac Efron and Zendaya caught my ear because of the lyrics of the song. They matched exactly what I was feeling when writing Carter and Eve’s scenes. Carter was hopeful that their relationship would work while Eve was sure that it wouldn’t. You should try listening to the song sometime. I think you’ll like it.

Temptation: 7 Things You Didn’t Know

Temptation Website CoverTemptation is one of those books that you either love or hate. Mostly because both characters are flawed and make mistakes that could make anyone raise their eyebrows. Red is so firm in his conviction that marriage isn’t for him that at first he comes off as kind of an asshole. Meanwhile, Trinity can come off as quite having trust-issues that are taller than a mountain. If you read the book, then I’m sure you know what I’m talking about. If you haven’t read the book… WHY? Why, why, why? Seriously… WHY? Grab your copy first before you read this post because there will be spoilers.

Okay, now onto the tea.

1: RED’S MOTHER IS DEFINITELY A RACIST

Choi Hye-jinYou must’ve gotten a hint of it when you were reading her parts, right? The lady doesn’t like people who don’t look like her, which is everyone who isn’t Asian. Trinity got only a small taste of it but if I do write a follow-up book, Hye-jin’s distasteful attitude will be more obvious. Usually, I don’t really focus on racism in my stories. I prefer my characters to be tolerant of differences between them and others. However, everyone knows that the world isn’t perfect like that. Hye-jin might end up being my first venture into that world.

2: JOSEPH’S ACCIDENT

Joseph BarclaysEveryone’s wondering what actually happened to Trinity’s father because I didn’t really explain it much when I was writing the story. Well, before his accident Joseph was a mechanic. His dream was to own his own shop but even without it he was a pretty good father, husband and provider. When Trinity was thirteen, he got involved in a car accident that messed with his spine and vocal cord causing him to lose the ability to use his limbs and his voice. In the story, he is going through rehab. But I’ll be honest, after 15 years of being like that I don’t think much is going to change in his condition. The Barclays are pretty lucky that he is still around.

3: MY INTEREST IN ASIAN CULTURE INFLUENCED THE STORY

Now you all know that I’m currently addicted to Asian TV. I’m out here bingeing hard on Korean romantic comedies, Chinese wuxia series and Japanese medical dramas. It’s kind of surprising that I’ve only written one book with an Asian lead (The Love Contract) and even then the female lead was an Asian. I think it was time for me to try an Asian Man with a black woman romance. Expect more in the future.

4: THE CHARACTER’S CHOICES ARE NOT A REFLECTION OF MY OWN

Jared 'Red' KangAs you’ve read the book, I think you’ll realize that both Red and Trinity are pro-choice. Now, my blood is liberal red. I’m open-minded about a lot of things, but I haven’t yet decided what my position on abortion and stuff like that. The reason is because I can identify with both sides of the conversation. Maybe it’s because I’ve never really been in a situation where I had to decide between my future or an unborn child.

Trinity BarclaysRight now I’m old enough and financially secure enough that even if I had an unintended pregnancy, abortion wouldn’t be on my list of things to do. I can afford to be pro-life. But I don’t know everyone else’s situation or background so I think it’s only fair for me to sit out of the conversation and not have an opinion. Either way, when you see my characters being pro-choice don’t assume that that’s my stand. It’s theirs and they have their reasons that go beyond just politics. Next time I might have a pro-life Lead who knows.

5: RED & TRINITY’S STORY IS NOT OVER

Red and Trinity’s journey is just beginning. Trinity is getting into a family that is extremely different from hers, not just because of how they look but how they think too. It would be interesting to explore these differences and follow her journey as she tries to adapt. That would of course include conflicts in hers and Red’s relationship because he has to be loyal to both her and his family. If I write a follow-up book for them, there’s a good chance that it will be based in Korea… ya know, throw Trinity into the furnace and see whether she burns. The future of that story is in your hands. Let me know in your review whether you’d be interested in a Part 2 and I’ll see what I can do.

6: DESTINY’S RECOVERY JOURNEY MAKES A GREAT STORY

Destiny BarclaysDestiny is another character who had me fascinated. She’s a smart girl who got roped in by addiction and is trying to crawl out of it. It would be interesting to see how this works out in the long run and whether she can sustain a relationship all while trying to stay clean. I haven’t decided whether I’ll give her a story but if you guys really, really insist I might think about it.

7: JASPER SAWYER’S ‘PRETTY, PRETTY’ WROTE THIS BOOK

Jasper Sawyer is pretty unknown in the singing world but I’m not sure why. The guy has a great voice and great lyrics. Why are you all sleeping on him? I found him by chance. I was watching someone’s apartment tour and they had ‘Pretty, Pretty’ playing in the background. Immediately I was hooked and I went to look for the song. It’s a pretty song and it talks about loving each other even after time when looks fade. You should check it out.

Passion: The Untold Stories

Passion Website CoverPassion! Passion! Passion!

The book that almost didn’t get written.

Well, it got written and is now published. In brief, the book follows the relationship of political consultant, Michael Klein, and his pesky actress neighbor, Gigi. The moment these two kids meet, they clash. I’m talking war and pettiness galore. Enemies? Psh! These two give a new definition to the word. So you can imagine their horror when they find out that they are attracted to each other.

Tell me that you’ve read it. No? Why not? I know you’ll like it, but if you don’t trust me then Go and READ IT for yourself lol. But make sure you read it before you continue reading this article because we’re gonna have some spoilers in here. I don’t want to ruin the book for you.

If you’ve read the book, then here are a few more details that will put the book in context for you.

1: I ALMOST DIDN’T WRITE THIS BOOK

After Obsession (the first book in this series), I got a little down since some people didn’t like the characters. It happens and I don’t begrudge those readers. I mean not everyone will like the same things. Besides that Freddie and Lex were odd ducks… their personalities were not for everyone. But I won’t lie and say that the unfavorable reviews didn’t get me a little down.

For a minute there I thought of just shutting down the series and doing something else. But after thinking about it for a while, I realized that I was focusing on the wrong thing. Though there were some people who just weren’t into the book, there were many more who loved it. Me included. I enjoyed writing Obsession, and couldn’t wait to write the rest of the series. In fact, I was (and still am) so excited that I got covers for the whole series made in advance. That’s how invested I was. It wouldn’t be fair to myself or to readers who are looking forward to the rest of the series to just stop. So I decided to write the book anyway.

And I’m glad I did.

I had a lot of fun writing about Michael and Gigi. These two’s Tom and Jerry relationship had me laughing to myself like a crazy person as I wrote. They were fun. I hope you thought so too. Don’t forget to let me know what you thought of them when you leave your review.

2: MICHAEL’S BROTHER GABRIEL IS ACTUALLY GAY

Michael KleinAh! You’d forgotten that Michael even had a brother, right? Even though he didn’t make an appearance in the book and was only briefly mentioned, Gabriel exists. He’s an architect with a heart of gold. That’s why he’s out in Venezuela trying to build houses. He’s also gay. I know, I know… how radical! But hear me out… I’m trying to make an effort to be more diverse about the characters I write. In future don’t be surprised to see Gabriel back in the States and looking for a relationship. Yes, that means that I will try out MM fiction. Are you ready for it or did you just give me a side-eye? Let me know what you think.

3: WHY GIGI WON’T DUMP HER MOTHER

Lisa ChampionY’all know this lady called Lisa, right? She is a mess. Can you imagine having a mother like her? Yeesh! But mothers like this exist. Most people in Gigi’s position would cut contact with her and I know some of you were wondering why Gigi still gives her space. Well, she’s family. Think of it this way; Gigi has no father, no sibling and her grandmother (the person who really cared for her) is dead. Lisa is her only blood relation. She might be a devil but she’s the only one Gigi has. I’m not sure that there’s a line that she could cross that would make Gigi cut her off. But who knows… now that Gigi has a new family she may start to realize just how toxic her mother is. I know y’all would’ve liked me to give the two some closures but sometimes in life people just stick with family even if they’re crappy.

4: GIGI’S FATHER IS STILL OUT THERE SOMEWHERE

In the book, I didn’t say much about Gigi’s father. Lisa really doesn’t talk about him because he hasn’t been in either of their lives since Gigi was born. But he exists. I thought of bringing him back in but figured that Gigi already has enough drama with her mother, we don’t need a deadbeat dad stirring that messy pot anymore.

5: MORE OF THE HEIRS WILL GET BOOKS

We’ve still got three heirs without books; Ari, Red and Logan. Yes, I plan to give them happy endings too so please don’t tune out of the series. Y’all know me; once I start a series I work on wrapping it up no matter how long it takes me. But I’ll try to make sure the books get released fast. If you’re not already in my Book Club, join it so that you can get immediate updates once the books are out.

I'd Like To Join Linda's Book Club (Magenta)

6: DAVIDA MIGHT GET HER OWN STORY

Davida is an interesting character. Her kind of loyalty doesn’t come every day and she’s been friends with Gigi for over ten years. I think she deserves a story. She’s already married and has one kid, but that doesn’t mean that the drama ends just because you’re married. What do you think about a story that explores after-marriage drama?

7: MICHAEL BOLTON’S ‘MURDER MY HEART’ WROTE THIS BOOK

Yo! I am a fan of Michael Bolton. He’s one of the earliest singers I remember being amazed by. That husky voice… Lord! That husky voice. I confess that I have quite a few of his songs saved up for rainy days, but for this book ‘Murder my Heart’ was my jam. The song is almost a decade old but it still works. I mean, listen to the song for yourself then tell me that you can’t come up with a romance novel for it.

She’s Definitely NOT His Type

And she drives him insane. Every time they cross each other’s path they fight like cats and dogs, so why can’t Michael stop thinking about Gigi? Why does she own his fantasies? She has him crossing lines he never thought he was even capable of crossing.

Passion is now available for your reading pleasure.

Passion Website Cover

Some people call Michael Klein responsible and upright. Others say he’s just uptight.

He’s been a single father for so long that the words ‘love’ and ‘fun’ have disappeared from his vocabulary. That is until Gigi Champion crashes into his life! Gigi’s the pesky neighbor he never wanted. Sure, she’s gorgeous, vivacious and has the prettiest eyes he’s ever seen. But it seems like her mission in life is to make a hot mess of his neat, responsible, o-so-serious world.

She’s definitely not his type.

The problem is Michael can’t get her out of his mind. All he wants to do is haul her over his knee and see that pretty mouth of hers open with a pant, a gasp, and a long moan. But he can’t do that. Or can he?

What I’m Reading: The Forbidden Man by Elle Wright

The Forbidden Man was written in 2015, and was Elle’s first novel – and what a first novel it was. The first thing that caught my attention was the title. The word ‘Forbidden’ just grabs you and pulls you in because it promises some illicit action and lots of passion. The book did not disappoint. Right from the start the book grips you and never lets you go until the end. It’s drama filled, has well-rounded characters and explores some interesting themes like betrayal, family and mental disorders.

The Forbidden Man CoverSydney is engaged to Den. The only problem is that Den loves to dip his stick in other pots. This isn’t the first time she’s caught him. You’d think that after getting caught and forgiven, Den would change. You’d be wrong. Den is just… I can’t even.

Lots of people would say that Sydney should have left Den the first time he strayed, but I can understand why she didn’t. She owes him; he helped her get through the most painful time of her life. To top it all off, Den has a mental disorder (I think it’s bipolar), and we all know how those disorders can screw with rationality. Personally, I felt like it might have contributed to his inability to ‘stick’ to Sydney.

Enter Morgan. Morgan had been Sydney’s rock through her problems with Den, and when she endd her engagement she runs to him. The same night – things happen. And that’s when the real drama starts. See Morgan is Den’s brother. Yes, you heard that right… he is Den’s brother.

Let me stop there before I ruin the book for you.

Bad Cop: 5 Things You Didn’t Know

BC Website CoverAh! Bad Cop. The one that almost got away. Thankfully, I managed to get our relationship back on track and we finally have a happy ending *cue applause. I bet you’re just as glad as I am that the book is finished though for different reasons. In your head you’re saying, “Thank God. Now we don’t have to listen to her whining about this damn book all the time.” Lol. ‘Tis okay. As long as you’re happy.

Lucas and Brandy were high school sweethearts who reconnect thirteen years later. Lucas is now a cop and Jasmine is a very, very successful financial manager. Given their explosive break up, it’s no surprise that their reuniting isn’t a happy occasion. Worse, the whole thing is shadowed by the death of Jasmine’s assistant. It took a while to get these two to deal with their past as well as solve the murder, but as always Dr. Phil a.k.a. Linda managed it. This be what I do.

You’ve read the book, right? If you haven’t, I don’t even know what to do with you. Go and READ IT. If you’ve read it, then here are a few more facts that might make you smile – or frown.

1: THIS BOOK HAS BEEN REINCARNATED THREE TIMES – I THINK

I don’t even know where to start. Jasmine was originally called Brandy. When the book first appeared, she was a naïve wannabe actress who’d somehow gotten a job as a stripper. Yes, a stripper. In that first reincarnation, she struck up a friendship with a suspicious guy called Rafi, lost her roommate to a serial killer and had a frenemy called Kia who had slept with Lucas in the past. In the second reincarnation, she had a little more backbone, was still friends with Kia but had less of a relationship with Rafi (who now turned out to be the killer). In this reincarnation, all of that is gone. Shoot! I still miss Kia. Should have brought that lady back –lol. She had no shame and didn’t give a flying pig about what people thought of her THOT ways. But she’s gone now. The only constant was that the book was still called Bad Cop. This time when I started the rewrite, I decided to start with a completely clean slate. There are still a few scenes that were pasted from the originals, but there are so few and so heavily edited that I bet those who read all those other reincarnations won’t even recognize them.

2: LUC’S FATHER WAS SUPPOSED TO PLAY A GREATER PART

Originally, I’d intended to give Jasmine an older brother – a dead older brother. If that older brother had actually existed, then Luc’s father would have played a part in his death. As in while Luc’s father was robbing the store that sent him to jail, Jasmine’s brother gets killed in the course of that robbery. Of course that would’ve complicated Jasmine and Luc’s relationship. How do you start a relationship with the man whose father killed your brother? I ditched the whole storyline because it would have taken more than ten chapters to resolve the mess and I was already closing in on one hundred thousand words. But think about it! How would it have worked? Would her mom have even agreed so easily to let Lucas back into their life?

3: MICHAEL WALCOTT COULD HAVE DONE MUCH WORSE TO JASMINE

michael walcottAs you already know, the Michael Walcott is trash. But I was going to make him even trashier. Jasmine is a personal finance manager with a thriving YouTube channel. Teddy offered to get her a radio gig. I was going to give her that and a column with a Buzzfeed like online paper. Michael, with all his money, would then have ruined the whole thing by threatening to withdraw advertisement from the station and paper unless she was fired. His way of making her back off from the investigation. I was even thinking of getting him to pay people to mess with her channel (maybe leave bad comments or spread rumors). I know, I know. I’m as wicked as the Walcotts :D. But just imagine how awful her life would’ve been.

4: IT TOOK ME ONLY A MONTH TO WRITE IT

That’s right. When I started this newest reincarnation, it only took me one month to write 96,000 words. Meanwhile I’d been trying to write it for four years. Starting, stopping….. I think I figured out what the problem was. Because the book was a so mystery heavy, I was scared that people wouldn’t like it. My most well received books have been those that feel more erotic romance and just focus on the characters. But when I started Bad Cop this time, I just told myself that it didn’t matter whether others liked it or not. What mattered was whether I liked it. I told myself not to care about how it would be received or whether people would even buy it and just right. I think that’s what got me to let go of all my fears and just write. Finishing this book taught me that sometimes it’s hard to write just because you’re so conscious of the readers or what income a book will bring. Once you stop thinking of these things and let things be, it becomes much easier to write the story that you want.

5: IS THIS LOVE BY BRIAN NHIRA WROTE THIS BOOK

I know, right? The lyrics have absolutely zero to do with this book and yet for some reason, every morning when I sat at my desk to write it was the only book song that could get the juices flowing. The beginning especially got me (Let’s not even talk about his voice).

Quit playing with my heart

How dare you try to start what you don’t intend to finish

Is this a gimmick you’ve had planned right from the start

Something about those lyrics just connects with me. Maybe it’s because lately I’ve been talking to some guy who is into mind games. One day he is into you, calling like one hundred times per hour, and the next day he just goes MIA. He reappears a week later claiming to have missed you, declaring his love every second. Then disappears again. Right now, I wouldn’t even be surprised to find out that he has a wife and family somewhere out there which is why he keeps disappearing. Anyway, enough about me….. lol…. How you been? Have you read Lucas and Jasmine’s book ? You interested now?
