Ladies, gentlemen and non-binary folks, we are done with The Other Man.
Seriously, this has taken so long. Almost eight months. If you know me, then you know that that is ridiculous. I used to be the woman who could pop out a book a month. How times have changed lol.
Still, I regret nothing.
The book got finished, didn’t it? Plus, I really enjoyed writing it even though I took a couple of unearned break midway. I think it’s a good book, and I hope you think so too. If you haven’t read it, you should get it before you continue reading this post. Why? Because here on out, there’ll be spoilers.
Okay, onto the juicy stuff.
1: I’M NOT AGAINST OPEN RELATIONSHIPS
Despite how Amara and Justin’s relationship spiraled down the drain the moment they opened their relationship, I’m really not against open relationships. In some cases it can definitely work, especially if both partners want it. But in cases where one is coerced into it despite being anti, it rarely ever works. Someone always ends up getting hurt.
Amara and Justin’s relationship might’ve survived if she had the backbone to say no. Who knows! Maybe Justin would’ve backed away because in his own odd way he loved her and thought of her as his forever. Obviously, their marriage would’ve been filled with bumps, but they probably would’ve made it to the altar. She was ready to accept all his other flaws, wasn’t she?
2: JUSTIN WOULD PROBABLY BE PERFECT FOR SOMEONE ELSE
Justin is in not a perfect man. We can all agree with that. But he does have a point that in many ways, he is a great catch. He is good-looking, kind of faithful (the guy couldn’t even cheat without announcing, not financially abusive, not physically abusive, and kind of loyal (he stayed with Amara for ten years). Obviously, he has some glaring faults that he needs to fix but I think if he found (and survived) a woman who can call him on his shit unlike Amara, he might change. Who knows.
3: JUSTIN’S FAMILY IS GARBAGE
You guys had a little taste of Justin’s family, but I guarantee that it’s much much worse. His dad, Elijah, is a grade A POS. The man is a proud racist, sexist and homophobe. He is abusive (physical and financial), believes men and women should stick to their ‘traditional’ roles, and is of course a fundamentalist Christian (which they always are).
Justin’s mom, Laura, is a meek lady who is firmly under the dad’s foot. She did her best to protect Justin and his older sister, Kathy, but there was only a limited amount she could do when encumbered by her hyper-submissive personality and lack of financial security.
Justin’s sister cut off their parents as soon as she was eighteen and only talks to Justin once in a while. She blames their mother for sticking with Elijah when they would have been better off without him.
Justin’s relationship with his father is complicated. He doesn’t like him at all, but he tolerates him for the sake of his mother. Elijah was especially tough on Justin because he wanted him to be a ‘man’. Luckily, many of Elijah’s lessons didn’t stick.
So, as you can see we actually got a decent version of Justin. Given how he was raised, he could’ve turned out to be complete garbage. But he’s not. He may have serious flaws and an inability to appreciate what he’s got, but he’s definitely not his Dad.
4: AMARA’S FATHER HAS ANOTHER FAMILY
Y’all did not meet Amara’s dad, Rohan Sethy, in the book. All you really know is that he is Indian, he didn’t love Zoya, and he skipped town as soon as Zoya was done with him. So what happened to him?
Amara was three-years-old when Zoya decided that enough was enough after a domestic violence incident. Zoya and Amara lived in a women’s shelter for some time while the law was dealing with Rohan. He got 100 days in jail and community service. After completing his sentence, Rohan disappeared from their lives.
Last Zoya heard, he was somewhere in the West Coast. Apparently, he remarried but that second wife left him too. Rumor has it that Amara had three half-siblings but she’s never met them before. Maybe in the future.
5: YES, AMARA & MARCUS GET MORE THAN JUST A HAPPY FOR NOW
Her Other Man ended with them heading out for another date. I have it on good authority that that date turned into more and there is a happily-ever-after on the cards for them.
I might give you all a short story or something so you can see where they are now. But we’ll see. Let me know if you’re interested in more by leaving a comment.
6: CONOR MAYNARD’S VERSION OF ‘YOU BROKE ME FIRST’ WROTE THIS BOOK
If you’ve ever been in a bad relationship, then you need to hear this song. All the feels, my friend. All the feels! Especially the chorus. This song will have you packing your invisible bags and breaking up with that scumbag again. You’ll be making posts about how she/ain’t shit even though you haven’t seen them for ten years lol. I warned you!
